Uniland Development Company broke ground on its $14.4 million, 107-room Hampton Inn Buffalo – Amherst hotel at The Northtown Center at Amherst Recreation Complex, heralding a new era of sports tourism and innovative design in the region.

Uniland and the University at Buffalo’s Center for Inclusive Design and Environmental Access (IDeA Center) are implementing Universal Design standards for socially responsible design.

It will be the first hotel in the country to earn isUD certification, an emerging standard for user-centered design focused on usability, wellness and social relations. For example, the hotel will feature accented carpets for easy navigation and themed art to visually delineate hotel floors.

The groundbreaking on October 18, 2018, featured remarks by Town of Amherst Councilmember Jacqualine Berger and Uniland Vice President Michael Montante.

The hotel will offer on-site lodging to athletes and visitors to The Northtown Center at Amherst. Its Universal Design features and proximity to the arena compelled USA Hockey to make The Northtown Center its national headquarters for its Sled Hockey division.

When it opens, the Hampton by Hilton Buffalo – Amherst will welcome athletes and their families, corporate travelers, prospective students and alumni to the University at Buffalo, and Western New York tourists. The hotel will offer special amenities to serve sports teams including a large breakfast buffet, state of the art fitness center, and meeting/banquet facilities for up to 80 people. It will also include an indoor pool, laundry room and paved walkway to the Northtown Center.

The estimated opening date is Summer 2020.
